The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen, which is directed by Jennifer Abod, follows Bowen’s three passions–dance, activism, and teaching. Bowen’s appearance will be the first time a documentary star has attended a GlennFest Film Festival screening. The screening will take place on Sunday, October 9, at 6 p.m. at the Downey Civic Theatre.
The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen is a feature length documentary that begins with Bowen’s discovery of her first love – classical dance – in the Roxbury section of Boston, Massachusetts. In the film, her stories unfold within the cultural, economic and political climate of the times. Bowen’s desire to perform on Broadway in the 1950s was thwarted by racism. Like so many other black performers, she had to travel to the stages of Europe to find work. When Bowen returned to the United States, she married a young drummer and established the only black dance school in Connecticut, The Bowen Peters School of Dance, which influenced many. During these years, she discovered the writings of black lesbian feminists, which gave her the courage to claim her own sexual identity and transform her life.
Hummingbird Meadows, drag artist of West Hollywood, will appear at GlennFest Film Festival for the la Cage aux Folles after party, on Wednesday, October 5. The after party is drag theme–a nod to the la cage aux Folles night club in the film–and will present two songs by Hummingbird Meadows. The Epic Lounge will host the event at the conclusion of the film screening.
Hummingbird Meadows has participated in numerous drag shows and performances in the Los Angeles area, including Men in Heels, Micky’s Showgirls, and Once Upon a Time into the Woods. She currently works at Micky’s of West Hollywood.
La Cage aux Folles follows Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault as two gay men living in St. Tropez. They are forced to change their ways when their son announces his engagement and invites the fiancée and her parents for dinner. They try to conceal their lifestyle and their ownership of the drag club downstairs during their stay.
On October 2, beginning at noon, the Downey Arts Coalition and the City of Downey present a celebration of Art, Film and Space. Three free movies will be provided by GlennFest Film Festival including family-friendly Ice Age: Collision Course; the astronaut documentary, The Last Man on the Moon; and the anime concert film Joe Hisaishi in Budokan: Studio Ghibli 25 Years. The Aerospace Legacy Foundation presents a panel discussion about Downey’s role in aerospace history, “Journey to the Stars and Beyond.” There will be artist booths on the plaza, live music, food trucks, and “Cosmic,” a specially curated art exhibit in the theatre lobby.
