Master of Dissonance
Synopsis
Master of Dissonance is a documentary inside the mind of Jacob Sokoloff, an artist from Long Beach, California who creates musical instruments and obscure works of art out of recycled materials. Jacob made a name for himself building and selling wind chimes out of his small workshop in Long Beach. But as Jacob continues in his profession, he desires to make art that is bigger than life and connects to people on a complex, emotional level.
Jacob has been in business for over 30 years under the employ of his sister, his main client for his wind chimes. As he watches the joy and childlike wonderment of people ringing his chimes, he develops bonds with the people closest to his work. But still, Jacob explores different ways in which his art can connect with people beyond his iconic wind chime collection.
The film’s narrative unfolds through Jacob’s perspective, beginning with the assembling of a wind chime and a look into his sister’s store. As it progresses, the film takes a deeper look at Jacob’s personality, his home life, and his inspirations for making music, including a closer examination at his own relationship with his father. Master of Dissonance concludes with Jacob accepting that his chimes are his strongest bond with people and his best known work, but his desire to do something different and change the world in which he lives will never escape him.
